Create Your Website or Blog in 30 minutes!

#MoneyChat Create Your Website in 30 Minutes! Just Follow this Step-by-Step Guide!

Starting a blog or website from scratch may conjure up images of learning code and needing an IT degree, but in reality it’s something that couldn’t be easier to do yourself.  You can use BlueHost to do just that and join a ton of other folks who have created their own websites as well!  So today is your day –  I’m going to show you how you can create your very own website in no time – all you need is 30 MINUTES!

Every website has three components:

  1. The first is the domain. This is the address for the website, like
  2. The second is a place to host the site. Hosting a website is simply web-speak for a place (a web server) to put all of the code that can be linked to the domain so that it will appear online. While it is possible to host your own information, it is far easier to let a third-party service host your files. I recommend Bluehost.
  3. Finally, you’ll need what’s called a Content Management System or CMS. The most popular one is WordPress hands down, I love it – it’s the one I’ll be showing you here. The two other major CMS systems are Joomla and Drupal, but they are best reserved for experts. WordPress is easy to use yourself without hiring a professional web designer.

Picking Your Web Host

Web hosting services are a dime a dozen, but there are very few that provide the quality and reliability that you need to have in a site without needing to have a lot of technical know-how. We will be using Bluehost for this example, but you can check out this article  comparing several others and decide for yourself. I highly recommend Bluehost and Hostgator. Please note that I am an affiliate for them both, but I wouldn’t be if I didn’t believe in their products. I currently use Hostgator for my websites, but will be creating another site for my brand using Bluehost this year.

Here are just some of the reasons why I suggest Bluehost:

  • Single click installation
  • Pretty good technical support
  • Unlimited account hosting (As many websites as you want!)
  • 30-day money back guarantee
  • Customer service that doesn’t suck (very important!!)

Another advantage is that Bluehost can handle both hosting your website and registering the domain for it in one place. That way you don’t have to deal with two different companies for your billing – it’s easy one-stop shopping.

Now, let’s go through the steps that you’ll go through to get your site up and running.

How to Set Up BlueHost

Go to the Bluehost home page and click on ‘Sign Up Now’. You’ll be asked to choose a domain name. Bluehost will let you know if the name is available. Your first domain purchase is free when you sign up with Bluehost. For most domains you will have to pay a small yearly fee to renew the registration, typically around $8-15.

Next you’ll fill out some personal info…

Then you’ll be taken to a plan selection page. Most hosting companies bill on a monthly basis, but hosting providers prefer customers buy a year’s worth at hosting at a time. As an incentive, they will cut you a deal if you do this. The longer your plan, the cheaper your bills will be.

Once you choose your plan, you will also be presented with a bunch of add-on options. The main one you’ll want to take a look at is Domain WHOIS Privacy. There is a central database called WHOIS that shows who owns which domains. A lot of personal information can get revealed through a WHOIS search, including emails, addresses, and phone numbers. It’s also used often by spammers to harvest information for targeting. However, by choosing to purchase domain privacy you can keep much of this information hidden. It’s an extra fee, but it’s one that I recommend.

The other circled services above are to help with website security, backing up your website, and getting your website noticed faster by search engines. You’ll want to click on the “More Information” links above to see if you want to purchase the others, but for your first website they’re not strictly necessary and you can add them on afterward if you like.

Once you’re finished with that, put in your billing method and continue through the prompts until your purchase is complete. Once you are finished, you’ll receive an email from Bluehost with your username and password for the control panel (cPanel). Log into cPanel and we’ll continue.

Installing WordPress

Bluehost makes this the easiest part of the process by letting you use the MOJO Marketplace. From inside the cPanel interface, just click Install WordPress.

This will bring you to the WordPress installation screen.

Step 1:  Click Start to begin a new install.

Step 2: Select your website domain from the dropdown then click Check Domain. Do not put anything into the box on the right.

Step 3: Choose a name for your website, and then input an admin username, password, and email address.

You’ll use this to access WordPress’ control panel. This is known in WordPress-speak as the Dashboard. You want this username and password to be different from the one you set for your cPanel. Once you’ve put them in, click the terms and conditions checkbox. Leave the ‘Automatically create a new database for this installation’ checkbox checked! Confirm all of your settings, then click the Install button.

Step 4: You’ll see an installing screen followed by a confirmation screen.

Even if you’re impatient, the process is pretty fast.  It will give you a progress bar so you can check on your installation. When it’s finished, it will give you the site URL, admin login URL, username and password. You will also receive an email copy of all this information.

Getting into WordPress

It’s time to get started! First, go to your normal domain. If you don’t see a page with a post that says “Hello World”, close your browser, wait a half hour, then try again. It takes a little bit of time for the information on a new domain to go through the internet. If you can see it, then congratulations! Your hosting is set up correctly and you’ve successfully installed WordPress.

To get into the Dashboard, you’ll need to put in the WordPress admin URL. It’s usually After you enter your username and password, click Log In.  You’ll be taken to the Dashboard. Your Dashboard may look slightly different than the one below depending on the version of WordPress you have installed.

WordPress Themes

As a bonus, I’m going to tell you a little bit about WordPress themes. Themes are pieces of code that tell WordPress your site design, think of them as design templates for your website. Basically, they make your site look nicer than the default theme.

WordPress makes it very easy to install many themes so you can try them out on your site.

  • On the left side of the Dashboard, hover the cursor over ‘Appearance
  • Select ‘Themes’.
  • Click ‘Add New’ button in the new panel that appears. You can browse through thousands of themes using the search features. To see a demo of any of them, just click on the tile and if you like it, click install.

Installing a theme adds it to WordPress, but it doesn’t make it active on your site. To change the actual theme, go back to the main ‘Themes’ page and find the one you selected. Hover the cursor over the theme to reveal the ‘Activate’ button. Click on that and your site will change to the new theme. You can do this as often as you need until you find the perfect site design for you.

Setting up a blog or website doesn’t need to be a harrowing experience.  Follow this tutorial and you’ll see how simple it can be – especially through Bluehost and its one-click installation process. Remember that you will need to pay a monthly fee to your hosting provider and a yearly fee for the domain to keep your website functioning, unless you’ve chosen to pre-pay in advance. Both are very low cost. Alright that’s it! You are ready to rock and roll! Once you’re website is created – please share the link below and a one-liner description!
