Business shows are all the rage right now, and for good reason! While many can be a little drama filled, or show more cat fights than work, they also show the true essence of what it’s like to be an entrepreneur or small business owner. So what are some of the best business shows airing right now?
Planet of the Apps
1 Season, Started June 6, 2017, on Apple Music. Must join Apple Music before watching.
So, this one has gotten mixed reviews, but I say it’s worth a shot to see for yourself. They may get better over time. I love the concept – app creators are given the opportunity to pitch their app to a panel. If their concept is chosen, they are mentored on how to pitch their app to Lightspeed Venture Partners for a chance at real funding. Judges include Jessica Alba, Gwyneth Paltrow, Gary Vaynerchuk, and Will.i.Am.
8 Seasons, last season wrapped up May 12th, 2017. Airs on ABC Fridays at 9 pm ET.
This is one of the best business shows on T.V., who doesn’t love Shark Tank? It was my first biz tv love! “The Sharks”- self-made business tycoons, and “The Entrepreneurs” – business owners who need funding to help grow their businesses. Each entrepreneur must pitch to The Sharks in hopes of getting one to invest in them. The Sharks make choices on pitches based on the business idea, and the hope that their investment will be returned. The comraderie (or lack thereof) among the sharks is hilarious. You learn a lot about pitching – being prepared by knowing your business in and out.
Small Business Revolution Robert Herjavec
1 Season, Exclusive on Hulu
Follow entrepreneur Robert Herjavec (from none other than Shark Tank) and marketing expert Amanda Brinkman (Deluxe) as they work to revitalize the small town of Wabash, Indiana. Every episode, they focus on a new small business in the heart of the town, Main Street.
I haven’t had a chance to watch this yet, I’ll have to get Hulu, but it definitely looks like a winner.
4 Seasons, Season 5 starts June 6th at 10 ET on CNBC.
Sooo, I’m still a little salty that Marcus Lemonis, host of The Profit, was in Detroit speaking and I had no clue. I’ve got to update my Google alerts!!! He gives real deal advice as he comes in and basically takes over their business… after writing a pretty hefty check of course. He helps struggling businesses with his expertise in various industries. I learn so much from his show, you get a sneak peak into how big business truly works when done right. He travels across the country sharing his famous People/Process/Product principle.
5 Seasons. Season 6 will air early 2018 on SPIKE.
Host Jon Taffer consults a new nightclub or pub every episode and offers his professional expertise and experience to help save their failing business. His ultimate goal is to save the business from closing. If you want to open a bar, club or even restaurant, you will find this interesting.
Like A Boss
1 Season. Airs Wednesday’s @ 9:30 pm ET on Oxygen.
This seems like a great show for those who want to get into the entertainment industry, to really see what it’s like. Nick Cannon is the host (what DOESN’T he do?) – the show follows assistants to the stars as they do what it takes to go from the bottom to the top with their employers. Through hard work and motivation, these assistants are doing whatever they can to gain the success their bosses have. I can’t wait to watch!
8 Seasons. Not officially renewed for season 9, but can watch most episodes online.
Host Anthony Melchiorri is a hotel and hospitality expert that visits a new hotel every episode. Each hotel is struggling with problems and many owners are facing complete shut down until Anthony comes along. He devises a plan with his team and the hotel staff in order to make their business as great as it should be.
Billion Dollar Buyer
2 Seasons. Yet to be picked up for season 3. Aired on CNBC.
Host Tilman Fertitta travels around the U.S. to sample new and innovative hospitality products. Small business owners must impress him to land a deal and become a partner with Landry’s, Inc., as a supplier to Fertitta’s over 50 leading Landry’s restaurants, hotels, and entertainment brands. I learn a lot from this show about the restaurant business, dealing with vendors, etc. I like that the show demonstrates how people can win and fail when playing in the big leagues as Tilman doesn’t do business with them all. Some lose and that’s part of business life.
Tabatha’s Salon Takeover
5 Seasons, 2008-2013, Watch on Bravo, Amazon, or Google Play.
Every beautician and barber should watch this show!! You can basically get a consultation for FREE with each show! I first watched this on Amazon Prime, so check for it there as well. For one week, Tabatha takes over the keys of a new salon and uses her honest approach to help salon owners and their stylists. Tabatha renovates their space, sends them through training, and gives them the push they need to turn their salon around.
What business shows did I miss? What do you love to watch that motivates you in your business?
